‘NCIS’ season 13 spoilers: Michael Weatherly shares truth about Gibbs cliffhanger
For most of the summer, the major question for “NCIS” has been “what happens next?” following what happens to Agent Gibbs … but we feel like Michael Weatherly really puts it best when it comes to describing this situation to TVLine:
“I don’t think anyone thought that was going to be Cliffhanger of the Year, because obviously he’s coming back … It’s more about how he comes back, how that impacts the team, and what the ramifications are.”
What is exciting the more we hear about the upcoming season are some of the “changes” that have been strongly hinted at in many interviews now. Is it possible that the show has an entirely different structure? It seems that way, and it definitely feels as though there could be some sort of alterations in the hierarchy of NCIS itself. While Vance is probably still the man in charge, is Gibbs really going to be in a position to lead anymore? He may be in terms of wisdom, but we don’t know just how much you can get him out in the field anymore.
This is just our own speculation, but what we’d like to see coming up now is a series of scenes that really emphasizes characters like Weatherly’s DiNozzo and Sean Murray’s McGee come into their own, and what happens when their ideas of how to operate clash with some of Gibbs’ own thoughts. Yet, given that he is not taking an active role on the outside, what can he really do to control them? We’ve had a dozen years of a familiar structure, so anything that can be done to shake this up at this point is welcome.
The new season will premiere on Tuesday, September 22, and in the early going for Gibbs, he may be too preoccupied with survival to even advise at all. This is why Jon Cryer is also present as Dr. Taft, the man responsible for saving his life.

I hope tony gets more screen time, he needs it, I would love to see his role become advanced and more evolved. Episodes are mote interesting with him. They keep saying that his friendships and relationships are going to class and be really tested, I wonder what strain that will put on his future there. I really hope michael weatherly stays with the show until the end and gets more stories based on his character tony.

I too hope that Weatherly’s role will increase. He’s a very interesting and strong actor on those rare occasions when he is given good material. While Harmon is certainly the big name and decent actor, I’ve frankly seen all of his tricks numerous times and tire of the show repeating itself with one angsty Gibbs arc followed by another. I don’t think Murray is quite strong enough character to take over the team and would be very unhappy if they turn Tony into a loser again just for the comedy of it. It’s time to let him shine. He’s been maligned and pigeon holed as the weak link joke for far too long. The show was much more interesting when DiNozzo was also portrayed as a crucial player and Weatherly was given good material to act.

I’m hoping for Gibbs to stay the leader of the team. I’m honestly so tired of Tony being the center of attention. And he also doesn’t work for me as the leader. He was in charge once and failed to me. Of course, the fact that both McGee and Tony’s so called ‘true love’ Ziva had little to no respect played a part as well but in my opinion Weatherly’s acting is not strong enough to portray a leader. And the same goes for Sean Murray. If Gibbs isn’t the leader anymore what is the purpose of having Harmon on the show then? To be a supporter? I’m sorry but that’s a waste of talent and dishonor to the character in my opinion.

Tony was rarely the centre of attention last season. That position went to McGee, who became the defacto SFA in Gibbs’ eyes, apparently. And I disagree that MW’s acting isn’t strong enough. You only need to look at episodes like Truth or Consequences or, more recently, The Admiral’s Daughter and Grounded, to see what a good actor he is.
I don’t think for a moment that Gibbs isn’t coming back as the leader of the team this season. However, he suffered a serious injury and I would like to see the writers, for once, show the ramifications of that. Gibbs shouldn’t just be able to come back to work in episode 2 of the new season, since we know episode 1 starts seconds after the season 12 finale ended.

I respect your opinion and hope for you to respect mine. I watched ToC multiple times and same with The Admiral’s Daughter and to me, Michael is not convincing. I like him, and Michael too but I think other actors on the show are stronger. I don’t mean it to be rude or so, it’s just my opinion (taste?). I also like McGee and Sean Murray a lot but he wouldn’t be convincing to me either.

As I’ve seen you post on other discussions, and know you to be a rational and thoughtful poster, I can and do respect your opinion. I do agree with you on McGee/Sean, but I think we’re going to have to agree to disagree on Tony/Michael. :)

That’s fine. Life would be boring if we all would always agree. There’s nothing wrong with different opinions as long as they’re being presented and treated respectful from both sides. :) I guess we will have to wait and see what the new season has in store for each character :)
