‘Arrow’ season 4 spoilers: How John Constantine factors in

Arrow -At this point, we imagine that you have already heard the glorious news that yes, John Constantine is coming aboard “Arrow” for a one-episode guest spot. Now, we are getting a chance to find out a little more of just what this means.

The big thing to note here is that this was not an issue of trying to shoehorn Matt Ryan into doing something on the show when his character really did not belong there. Instead, this was more of just working things out with Warner Bros. and DC Comics. Subject-wise, it makes perfect sense for season 4 based on what executive producer Marc Guggenheim had to say per TVInsider:

“Each year on the show, we have added and expanded the mythology with different elements. In Season 2 we introduced the idea of superpowers, last year brought in the League of Assassins, and for Season 4, we always had a plan to introduce magic and mysticism … We were already swimming in those waters and that’s why Constantine is this great organic little development.”

As for how John’s appearance is going to make sense, let’s just say that it ties in some way into the decision to bring Sara Lance back from the dead. Given the timing of the resurrection so late after the fact, there are some consequences … and Oliver Queen is going to need a little bit of help:

“Unlike Thea, who wasn’t fully dead, the consequences of using the pit on someone as dead as Sara was creates some [challenges] …and John Constantine is uniquely suited to help our team deal with those.”

We hope that if nothing else, getting Ryan aboard this show is a nice love letter to fans of the short-lived “Constantine,” and while we’re sure that this is probably just a one-time spot for now, we still want to hope that he could maybe turn up again in the future.
