‘Community’ season 7 will not happen; Joel McHale effectively confirms show’s end
You can file this away as “expected but sad”: There will be no more seasons of “Community” on Yahoo Screen or seemingly anywhere else.
In an age where people tend to be extremely sensitive and they never want to say too much about anything or anyone, we actually love the explanation for this that Joel McHale gives in a new interview with Metro Weekly (thanks to TVLine for the find). He makes it clear precisely why the show will not be coming back; note that we don’t really think of this as a cancellation per se, since it is more of an issue of it having to end due to people wanting to do other things, and there just not being the budget out there to keep it going:
“All of our contracts were up after six years … All the actors on the show, almost without exception — their stock has risen significantly and it’s out of the pay rate that is affordable to make the show. So you’re not going to be able to get Alison Brie or Gillian Jacobs at a normal television salary anymore. There is just not enough money to be able to pay for the show.”
Also, these people have all given six years of their lives (with extremely long hours) to make this show. You cannot blame them if they want to go on and do something else for a little while.
Now that we’ve said this, we do firmly believe that a “Community” movie will happen someday to fulfill the prophecy. It’s probably one of those situations where you wait a couple of years for demand to crescendo, and then you see if you can then get the funding and get everyone back in the same place to make some more episodes.
If it doesn’t happen, we at least feel like the show’s sixth season (and first on Yahoo) had a really beautiful ending with McHale’s Jeff Winger coming to peace with the fact that he would be the last remaining original study group member at Greendale.
