‘The Fosters’ season 3, episode 8 review: Rosie O’Donnell shines in difficult Rita episode
Tonight’s new episode of “The Fosters” proved itself to be emotional, but somehow it was even more so than we expected going in.
Ultimately, much of the reason for that was finding out more of the story of Rita, and just how difficult her life has become at Girls United. Her daughter met Callie for the first time in this episode, and in the process we learned the story about her husband’s suicide and how ever since that happened, she has not followed some of the own lessons that she gives to other people. Their relationship was strained, and it was even more so when Rita crossed the line and struck her in the thick of a heated argument where she blamed Rita for what happened.
So when Carmen and Brooke had a fight later in the episode, and they threw Rita under the bus claiming that she hit Carmen, it was a shocking moment that forced us to question almost everything. We don’t want to think that Rita hit her, mostly because she claimed that before the incident with her daughter, she never hit anyone and was really careful. However, at the same time she was very stressed and feeling the weight of trying to care for so many people.
The one thing that we can say is that Rosie O’Donnell was really tremendous in this episode. It’s a shame that she hasn’t received more acting roles over the past couple of years, given that she’s become immensely underrated when it comes to drama.
Also in this episode, Callie continued to work on her foster-child app Fost & Found to give young children a voice during a tough time, Lena and Stef further admitted their relationship struggles, and Brandon also dealt with the news of AJ and Callie kissing very badly. We feel like Callie’s app is a story that will really blow up over the next couple of weeks, largely because she naming many of the people who have wronged her.
Overall, this was far from the happiest episode of “The Fosters,” but in terms of acting and writing it may be one of the strongest of the season. Grade: A-.
