‘The Last Ship’ season 2, episode 8 review: Can Michener be saved?
We have to give “The Last Ship” a good deal of credit at the moment. After all, there are very few other shows out there at the moment with their level of bravery or guts. Last week, we had an episode that featured an enormous amount of espionage, intrigue, and action.
Tonight, we had what felt at times to be an old-fashioned political thriller, with a good chunk of the story mostly revolving around one key question: Whether or not there was any way for Michener to be saved. This was someone who seemed to be in many ways brainwashed by Sean and the Immunes, and they knew of his political clout and what instilling him into power would do for their cause. Meanwhile, Tom Chandler realized the same thing and had to figure out of there was some humanity left in him.
To keep this short, let’s just say that there was. However, it was no easy task finding a way to extract this humanity. It took a great deal of time to get to this point, and it involved figuring out exactly why he believed Sean, what he took away from the Immunes, and some of the individual demons from his past. Michener may have felt that there was nothing better for him after doing some of what he has done. This is where Tom reminded up that almost everyone has at this point killed and suffered. They all have demons, and there is still a way to work beyond them.
Is it fair to trust Michener completely now that he has bonded personally with Chandler and seems to be on his side? We’re not sure of that just yet, but for the time being we at least feel like he offered up enough intelligence and brought some perspective on the Immunes that he could be one of the good guys. We know that there was a little less violence in this episode, but we enjoyed the political back-and-forth, allowing the actors and the writers to stand more more than ever. Grade: B+.
