‘True Detective’ season 2, episode 7 spoilers: Synopsis for ‘Black Maps and Hotel Rooms’
Perhaps the biggest spoiler in this article is that for the final two episodes of “True Detective” season 2, we are probably going to continue to complain about HBO’s synopsis strategy. It really does not make any sense: They hide releasing these as though there is something major hidden within them, and yet there are few things out there in which we see as more boring and vague.
“Black Maps and Hotel Rooms,” if you haven’t heard, is the title for episode 7, and let’s go ahead and share that synopsis before we say anything else about the story:
“Ray (Colin Farrell), Ani (Rachel McAdams) and Paul (Taylor Kitsch) take precautionary measures to elude detection and untangle a dark mystery. Frank (Vince Vaughn) deals with the fallout of his betrayal.”
Probably the biggest surprise to us about the past two episodes in particular is how isolated Frank has been for the most part from the rest of the story. We understand that Vince Vaughn’s character has his own issues to deal with, but separating him save for a few scenes here and there have only amped up the character’s flaws. That being said, we will concede that “Church in Ruins” on Sunday was one of the show’s better episodes, and while we don’t know how realistic the saga with Ani was, it was at least dramatic, compelling, and pretty darn terrifying at the same time.
The struggle in these last two episodes will be grounding the story, finding out who is really responsible for what happened to Caspere, and determine if these people can live with themselves moving forward. To us, the show has done the Paul character the least justice of the four, which is a shame given the superb work of Taylor Kitsch.
