‘Major Crimes’ season 4, episode 8 review: Sharon and Rusty’s next steps
From the vantage point of the case itself, we really cannot say that Monday night’s new “Major Crimes” episode really brought a whole lot when it comes to surprises. For the most part, this was a fairly straightforward cold case being re-opened, with the only wrinkle being having to work with someone new. That is something that the entire team is a little more unfamiliar with, and there was a bit of an adjustment period that goes along with that.
If we were to say what really stood out to us tonight, it has to be the character moments, including Rusty managing to find Gustavo after such a long search and so much digging into the Alice case. It is almost like this is one of those “life lessons” he has heard when it comes to hard work really paying off! He’s dedicated himself to this, and now more information could be gathered … but only in time. This sets us up well for a good couple of Rusty-centric episodes to close out the summer.
As for Sharon, we are mostly interested in the development of things between her and Flynn. This has been such a long-simmering relationship, and in many ways we have been anxious to see what the payoff will be for these two. We still are, but there’s just something magnetic about watching the two hit new milestones, which included tonight disclosing that they are in a relationship.
This story was fairly conclusive in that there were answers when it comes to the case and Shea’s participation in it, but there’s also still an open-ended quality since we don’t know what comes next. In the end, it was a solid mixture. Grade: B-.

I thought it was a great episode. Major Crimes usual excellent blend of humor and drama. I especially was so happy to finally have some forward motion on Andy and Sharon’s relationship. I really want to see more Andy and Sharon. As much as I loved Rusty’s character in the beginning and his dynamic with Sharon, now I feel that he’s getting a little too much screen time, and frankly taking away from what little time that Sharon and Andy get. I think the Rusty story has sort of played itself out and it’s time to move on to other aspects of Sharon’s life. I like Rusty, but I think now he should be in the background, for instance moving Provenza’s stuff.
