‘The Last Ship’ season 2, episode 7 review: Operation Michener
For most of the season, “The Last Ship” has told a tale of mystery, allegiances, and of course danger. That did not stop tonight during “Alone and Unafraid.”
This was a very intense hour, anchored mostly by the journey into what was in some ways the show’s version of the beast: The immune compound. Tom Chandler had a specific mission within the lair of Sean and company, and that was to figure out whether or not there was a potential ally present in the form of Michener. This is a guy who could be a leader of the United States, or at least is down the line of succession. There are not many of those people at this point still alive.
Step one of this episode was finding a way to figure out his true allegiance. We’re not sure that everything is completely cut-and-dry with that. So let’s just jump ahead to step two: Getting him out of there. We were a little more successful in that.
This was really an action-packed episode, and we actually loved that there were not too many subplots or other matters mucking it up and causing things to be far more complicated than they needed to be. Chandler got a chance to flex his hero muscles, and in the process we saw how the team on the ground had to use their own skill set (even at times their persuasion) to get out of there in one peace. It was a different sort of episode than what we’re used to with this show, but we enjoyed it. However, the struggle is far from over now. Back at the Nathan James, someone is going to have to figure out what to do with this “President” next, and if he really is a lost cause. Grade: B.
