‘The Comedians’ canceled by FX; surprising end for Billy Crystal – Josh Gad series

FX -On paper, “The Comedians” looked like it had every element of a series FX would want. You have one of the most iconic actors of a generation in Billy Crystal, an up-and-coming star in Josh Gad, and a premise that allows the two guys to more or send up themselves.

However, something just didn’t quite work along the way. The reviews were mixed from the get-go, the commercial support wasn’t there, and we feel like the final nail in the coffin was the show failing to get any love from the Emmys last week. Had that happened, we imagine that the network may have used that as a platform for a season 2 renewal. Since it didn’t, we’re not too surprised today to be reporting that there will not be a second season.

With this said, we do hope that Crystal does find his way onto another TV project in the future. We do think that premium cable is the right home for him, maybe somewhere that he can have a supporting role, come in, and steal some scenes from time to time. There will be plenty of other offers out there for him, provided of course that he really wants them. He is not the sort of guy who really needs to work again unless he really wants to.

As for Gad, we hope that he just gets some great offers that come his way. He has “The Book of Mormon” on his resume, and he would be best served to forget that “Pixels” hitting theaters this weekend ever happened in the first place. That movie is receiving tepid reviews.
