‘Poldark’ episode 5 review (PBS): Ross, Demelza, and Julia Grace Poldark

Poldark -Sunday night’s new episode of “Poldark” is one that had a variety of lovely moments within it from start to finish … at least when it comes to Ross and Demelza’s marriage. They not have a child! Julia Grace Poldark is the name, and she is just about every bit as adorable as you would hope. While Ross nearly lost some points for almost missing a big opportunity with his kid early on, there were a variety of sweet moments throughout here. For those of you who love Aidan Turner (and we know there are many of you), you probably enjoyed this episode greatly just for some of his moments. (Warning: Spoilers ahead!)

Ross also did his part to unite the labor force in a way that was almost revolutionary for the era, but unfortunately, Francis has a habit for completely screwing everything up. After a bout of gambling he more or less lost his business to Warleggan, which is going to come back to bite the whole family at this point.

Here’s a strange thought for many of you: Remember when Elizabeth was set to marry Ross? Now she could be moving down in the world, while Demelza is now on her way up after starting in a less-than-favorable position.

One other highlight tonight? Seeing Demelza try to get Blamey and Verity together, which was at the center of a somewhat-intense segment near the end of the episode. “Poldark” does have its action sequences, but at its core it is a character drama. That is what people watch for, and it succeeded for the most part tonight.
