2015 Teen Choice Awards: ‘iZombie,’ ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘Younger’ compete for Breakout Show
For the Teen Choice Awards, the Breakout Show category is in many ways similar to the New Series category on other awards shows. This is their way to recognize a potential program or two that has some potential to do really great things, but are still very early in their run and therefore often ignored. There are some good shows in here. One of them is a smash hit in the ratings, one was a surprising Emmy snub, and one comes from Rob Thomas, the creator of one of the biggest cult hits in years in “Veronica Mars.”
The nominees
Becoming Us (ABC Family)
black-ish (ABC)
Empire (Fox)
iZombie (The CW)
Jane the Virgin (The CW)
Younger (ABC Family)
Who will win – We imagine that Fox would probably want to see “Empire” win given that this is another chance to their stars cross-promote, but we really still don’t see this as much of a teen show. It’s probably the one in the mix here that is the least teen-friendly. We’re saying right now that “iZombie” is the favorite, mostly because of what we have seen the fan base for it do so far.
Who should win – “Younger” and “Jane the Virgin” are both really fun shows, and we wouldn’t have any problem with them coming away with a surfboard out of this. Still, it’s hard to dispute “iZombie” being exactly what the show needs: A fantastic and funny series with cool special effects and an interesting lead character in Liv. Plus, we feel like this is the ideal show to recognize it, since many others out there tend to ignore this genre.
