‘Beauty and the Beast’ season 3, episode 6 review: Cat, Vincent struggle with family issues
We have made it fairly clear that we weren’t the biggest fan of last week’s “Beauty and the Beast” episode, mostly because it hit the nail on the head metaphorically, and then proceeded to do so a hundred more times. It was far too predictable.
However, tonight’s “Chasing Ghosts” may be the best episode of the season, and it reminded us somewhat of the early days of the show when we were learning more about Cat’s family history and how Vincent was thrown into her world in the first place. It was also nice in a way to set the characters get at least somewhat of an opportunity to breathe, and spend a little bit of time apart. Sure, we love to see Cat and Vincent together as much as anyone, but they can also be strong individually and this episode proved that. It may even be our favorite installment for Kristin Kreuk as an actress in years. The scene of her watching her mother’s video offered a little bit of redemption, and a chance for her to realize that there are ways to positively remember her mother rather than freaking out over the reverence many in her family have for her.
As for Vincent, what we saw here for the most part were some more sad reminders that at times, he is just a tool and a platform for others. He is a war hero and he is a nice guy, but he doesn’t need or deserve that. He deserves his own family, and he has one with Cat and JT.
While we’ve seen more substantial episodes in the past for Tess and JT, the most important thing here long-term is that it finally seems more like the show is building towards uncovering the real story behind the experiments. We appreciate the time that this has been a slow built, and we also give applause to the producers and The CW to give us a little more of a slow build and a serialized story this year versus something that gives all the answers away in mere minutes. Episode Grade: A-.
