2015 Teen Choice Awards: Will Grant Gustin, Candice Patton, Gina Rodriguez win Breakout Star?

Teen Choice -Now that Comic-Con is over and we’re starting to catch our breath a little bit, we can continue our Teen Choice Awards voting series with a little more regularity! We hope to share some more of the categories over the course of the days ahead along with your personal picks for many of them. As we get close to the actual awards airing on Fox come Sunday, August 16, we will share in full what many of the results were of our own polling. It’s a fun tool for cross-comparing our results versus those of the actual show.

We’ve got an interesting category to discuss today in Breakout Star, mostly because there are such a wide array of people here. You’ve got comedies, dramas, superhero shows, and really one of the most diverse categories of the entire group. We do think that there are some favorites in here, but there are no guarantees.

The nominees

Bryshere “Yazz” Gray, “Empire” (Fox)

Grant Gustin, “The Flash” (The CW)

Candice Patton, “The Flash” (The CW)

Gina Rodriguez, “Jane the Virgin” (The CW)

Yara Shahidi, “black-ish” (ABC)

Jussie Smollett, “Empire” (Fox)

Who will win – Gustin is going to be the favorite based on the social-media traffic that we’ve seen so far. He is on a runaway hit show, CW series tend to clean up at the Teen Choice Awards, and to be frank, he deserves it. He is everything you could want in a TV superhero: Aspirational, charismatic, relatable, and still capable of kicking butt and taking names. It’s really hard to have all of those things, and ground a rather fantastic world in some essence of realism.

Who should win We said that Gustin should be nominated for an Emmy for this role last month. We’re not backing away from that claim now. There are many great performers in this list; Smollett could probably win if this was a different year, and we also want to recognize Rodriguez, who is captivating and fantastic on her own CW series and may even be an Emmy favorite when nominations are announced later this week.
