‘Poldark’ episode 4 review (PBS): Ross and Demelza’s big news, continued

Let’s talk about love, shall we? Tonight’s “Poldark” episode on PBS certainly allows us to have this opportunity, since it yet again contains some of the biggest revelations to date when it comes to Ross and his new wife Demelza. (Spoilers ahead.)

While these two were married, one of the clear problems for this relationship, at least in how it was presented to us, is that we really were not getting a chance to dive much into the meat of it. We did not know the full extent of Ross’ feelings in a post-Elizabeth world for him, and he was at times even questioned on it.

Luckily, we now know the truth: He loves her, deeply. Not only that, but she is pregnant! This show definitely moves along quickly, doesn’t it? It really has to, when you remember for a minute or two that there are only eight episodes and at the time there was no word on if it would get a second season. (We now know that it will.)

Unfortunately, the news was not all good for Demelza, as she was forced to ensure one of the most uncomfortable of parties, where she was continuously reminded rather harshly of her social standing. This was a reminder that while Ross may not care so much about what feels almost like a pure caste system, others do. This is something she will continue to have to overcome. She did have a surprisingly fair encounter with Elizabeth, though! Who anticipated that?

Elsewhere, the good news about Ross’ copper discovery in the mine was offset ever so slightly by Warleggan, a ruthless banker, pulling one over on Francis and by extension Ross and getting a share in the mine. The fact this happened alongside the passing of Charles gives this episode a sad feeling that while Poldark’s romantic life may have some level of happiness, there is chaos almost everywhere else.
