‘UnREAL’ episode 7 preview: The aftermath of a shocking death
Tonight’s episode of “UnREAL” was compelling television, but also probably one of the most depressing that the Lifetime series has presented to us as long as it has been on the air. There’s really no other way to describe an episode that ends with Mary, whose bipolar medication was tampered with, jumping from the roof of the mansion to her death.
As you would expect, this changes everything. A cheesy reality TV suddenly becomes a murder investigation, with her ex-husband leading the charge discussing how he was brought in just for the sake of causing drama. There’s no backing away from this, and the entire production is about to be blown up completely.
Here is the real point of conflict for the show itself: Whether or not this is classified as a homicide, and it is determine that someone deliberately caused this to happen. If that’s the case, game over. It’s already going to be hard enough for this show to continue as it is, given that this death is going to cause some of the other remaining women in the competition to question their emotional state after being locked up away from the world for so long.
We do feel like this episode will allow for a somewhat better discussion next week of mental health, and also the best way to treat contestants on a reality show. Sure, this is an experience that thousands of people wish to be a part of, but there’s a difference between wishing it and experiencing it. Getting good television should not always be the top priority.
