‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 6, episode 5 review: Lesli Stone rises high on the ‘A’ suspect list
For some reason, we have always assumed that the Uber “A” on “Pretty Little Liars” is probably female. Maybe a certain degree of this stems from the fact that with a show constituted mostly of female leads, there’s that sort of synergy present there. Also, you have a larger pool of possible candidates, given the number of recurring female characters … and we don’t think that anyone wants to really uncover that “A” is potentially one of the primary love interests like an Ezra or Caleb (even if Ezra is not technically in full love-interest mode at the moment).
Rather than waste time setting up the events that are coming up, let us focus character by character on some of the stories of the hour … at least until we make it to the end and everything comes together.
Aria – Who knew that Aria’s new photography hobby would include an accidental shot of “A”? This is a woman who at this point is desperate for anything and everything when it comes to answers … even though in reality, she didn’t have anything until getting her photographic “proof” about “A’s” gender.
Emily – The emancipation of Sara Harvey remains an important story, though for most of the episode we had almost no idea whatsoever why this still mattered. This week: They think about tattoos! This was a way to celebrate her freedom, though we’re not quite sure we would want to get inked up as a reminder of a friendship of someone you still barely know.
Hanna and Spencer – Sure, we had Spencer eating refreshments a little bit earlier in the episode, but the main event revolved around these two investigating the ruins of Radley (metaphorical, people) to figure out whether or not Charles DiLaurentis was really dead. Signs for now seem to be pointing that way!
Alison – Ali was forced to deal once again with her sketchy / super-mysterious father Kenneth, and in contrast to him we had new cop boyfriend Lorenzo. Other than Emily here and there, this is one of the few times she’s had someone in her life like this. What we are left to wonder is whether or not there is any lasting potential here. Ali has a tendency to self-sabotage, and this is a prime opportunity.
Eventually, the Liars reconvened at the end thanks to a discovery via Mona: Lesli Stone was at Radley, and was a former roommate of Bethany Young. She has the motivation to go after the Liars, and also some still-mysterious ax to grind. This was a reveal that made most of the stories (minus that whole tattoo thing) worth it tonight. Grade: B.
