‘The Fosters’ season 3, episode 4 review: Jude, Connor’s prom problems; Lena tackles hard issues
After some pretty dramatic episodes to start “The Fosters” season 3, it felt like the time was right for some of the characters to have a minute or two to unwind. This was at least one of the ideas behind “More Than Words,” the new episode that aired on ABC Family Monday night.
However, it turned out that this story was far more dramatic than what you would have expected, especially when it comes to the prom scene. Jude and Connor were supposed to go into this thinking that this would be a place where they would actually be accepted. However, at the same exact time what we saw with the two of them was Jude deciding that he did not want to be pinned down with the specific label of “gay.”
The prom also got a little bit awkward when it comes to Callie and her “date” Cole, who took the definition of date much more literally. He wanted something more than what she was willing to give, but it had nothing to do with him being transgender. She just saw him as a friend, and there is nothing wrong with that. It’s life. You had to love the way that the show handled this.
Meanwhile, the real meaning of the episode’s title came from Lena’s half-brother Nathan, who referred to her mother once using a really terrible word. This is something that she has kept buried for some time, but it was all brought to light during a dinner party. This was a story mostly about truth: Not everyone is going to admit to your wrongs, and sometimes you have to be okay with that and accept it. This was a great episode for its depiction of real relationships, so much so that what happened with Mariana and Matt almost took a back seat. Grade: B+.
