Amy Schumer, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock were concerned as ‘Daily Show’ replacements for Jon Stewart
Were we looking at “The Daily Show with Amy Schumer” at one point as a possible series? Based on what we’re hearing now from the famed comedienne herself, this was an opportunity that was presented to her at one point after it was revealed that Jon Stewart was going to be departing.
As a part of an interview with the Daily Beast, Schumer (who is starring in the upcoming movie “Trainwreck”) made it very clear that she had at least some sort of discussion with Comedy Central about stepping on board the show as host. It would have given her a lot of power on the network, and also an opportunity to have job security for a long time. However, she told the publication that really this security was one of the reasons that she turned it down:
“I was so honored to be asked and considered … With Comedy Central, I project so much ‘You’re my parents!’ on the network and the people that run it, so them saying, ‘We believe in you and trust that you can do this,’ I thought, ‘Oh my god, thank you!’
“And then I thought, ‘Well, I could give everyone I love a job and we could all be together for five years. But picturing being in a building and knowing what I was going to do for five years—I love not knowing. And I’ve never done anything safe or to make money for that reason. So, you know, I said, ‘I can’t start now.’ “
Meanwhile, a new story from the New York Times Magazine makes it clear that there were two other high-profile people who were both asked to become the new host. Amy Poehler quickly shot down the gig after being asked about her interest, and Chris Rock reportedly said that he would only be interested until after the 2016 election. Obviously Comedy Central does not want to have a revolving-door effect going on here.
In the end, we imagine that these are reasons why Trevor Noah now has the job. He is not a particularly well-known comic in America, but he does know Stewart’s show thanks to his correspondent role and he also seems to have the trust of the network. While there has been controversy, someone seems to have enough confidence that he can pull off the job. Otherwise, why spend all the money giving him a chance?
