‘Rizzoli & Isles’ season 6, episode 2 review: Jane and Maura go fishing for clues

Rizzoli and IslesTonight’s new “Rizzoli & Isles” episode probably feels a little more familiar to the show purists than the premiere, if for no other reason than that we had more of a lighthearted case, and the story that followed it was largely an entertaining romp that threw Jane and Maura into the fishing world.

During this episode, there was of course a murder investigation. At the same time, though, we also had such other entertaining moments as Jane forming a close attachment to a fish, Korsak’s apparent skill at creating and winning various bets, and also Angela getting into a diet that required her not to eat any white food. Yep, we are sure that there are probably some other people out there who have tried this diet at some point or another.

The part of season 6 that is somewhat bugging us so far is Drake, mostly because we have no idea what to make of him at the moment. Is he mysterious for a reason, or is he just some rude / cold new employee who is just like that? We’re hoping that it is not the latter, since character-specific mysteries are always fun one.

Above all else, though, what makes “Bassholes” to us a memorable episode beyond the case is the metaphorical fish-out-of-water part of it. Anytime that you can throw Jane and Maura into an unusual setting and have them still figure out a way to do their jobs, we are going to smile. This is the sort of summer TV comfort food we often crave, and we hope that the plan is to deliver more mysteries like this all summer. Sure, it’s not reinventing the show, but we don’t really feel like it needed to. Grade: B+.
