NBC’s ‘Hannibal’ season 3, episode 3 reaction: Gillian Anderson on Bedelia’s move
Bedelia du Maurier is certainly a fascinating part of the “Hannibal” universe, mostly because she is one of the sole outside voices in the storyline for Dr. Lecter right now … but she is hardly a voice of reason. She is someone who for the most part observes, but in her own bizarre way she participates, such as putting Hannibal’s latest victim out of his misery during last night’s “Secondo.”
Also, she has shown a few times now that she does have a potential death wish. Going away with this man to Europe is a part of that, but the same thing goes for suggesting to him that he killed and ate his own sister Mischa, while lying in a bathtub completely vulnerable with Hannibal giving her a very odd massage.
Why does she do something like that, and test this terrible person in such a way? That is something that Gillian Anderson (who has been sensational so far this season) expounds upon in a post-mortem interview with TVLine:
“It’s great. I mean, by that point it’s like balls to the wind. She’s playing constantly with what the boundaries are. So regardless of how much of a net she may or may not have set up for herself, that net does not exist within the walls of their apartment. Anything can happen there, and so any time she pushes those buttons, she is literally teasing the devil… she’s playing with fire, and she knows that, and she gets off on it.”
It is very entertaining watching Bedelia push her limits, but given her current position and the way she is handling Dr. Lecter, we cannot escape the feeling that this probably does not end well at all for her.
