Ratings: ‘America’s Got Talent’ continues to hold strong against NBA Finals
The NBA Finals are now over, and while the Golden State Warriors may now be champions, we do still feel like “America’s Got Talent” also has to be feeling pretty good about itself. When you consider some of the heavy competition that the NBC series was facing off against in its timeslot thanks to the big game, that is an enormous achievement.
So despite airing against Game 6 in its final hour, “America’s Got Talent” still ended up drawing a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic in addition to over 10 million viewers. These numbers are hardly a difference at all from the show last week. Maybe it was helped somewhat by it being a show featuring a variety of different / extreme acts, but regardless of the reasoning, this show is really impressing so far this season.
To us, the current success of NBC is showing more than anything else that the talent competition show is not necessarily dead as a genre, but that people are looking for slightly different experiences. Ultimately, you are not getting anything of the sort with the likes of “American Idol” and to a certain extent “The Voice,” which has started to lose at least some momentum.
We will have to see where some of the ratings go over the course of the rest of the season, and there is still one very simple reason for pause: Competition shows do tend to lose a little bit of steam when they hit the live rounds. Once we see “America’s Got Talent” at that point, we will have a better sense as to where it stands against some older seasons.
