‘The Bachelorette’: Kaitlyn Bristowe on Ian Thomson confrontation
Last night, “The Bachelorette” continued its season-long trend of having many of its male contestants being at least temporary residents of d-bag island. We started it off with McDill the first night, and then we had Kupah, Clint, JJ (who is somehow still there), and then Ian on last night’s new episode. We’re not including Nick in here given that he actually hasn’t done anything that terrible on this season, and we think that Joshua means well but went about it totally the wrong way.
Ian surprised us the most. We thought at the start of the season that he was a smart, likable guy, and possibly even a “Bachelor” contender. After his gloating last night, we’ve reversed course on that dramatically. Our issue wasn’t so much with him calling Kaitlyn Bristowe out, since having opinions is fine even if they are not popular ones; it was instead how he did it, and also how he came across in the confessionals.
As you would expect, Kaitlyn herself did not have positive things to say about Ian in her latest People Magazine blog:
“Honestly, the more I got to know Ian, the more arrogant I realized he was. Yes, he’s very intelligent, and I respect his opinions. I also believe in honest and open communication. But the accusatory way in which he confronted me was downright nasty and designed to hurt me. And it did hurt me. How did I handle him that night? Well, check out next week’s episode to find out!”
The one further thing that we’ll say about Ian is that while he is very smart, he apparently did not realize that anything at any time that you say on this show can go back to hurt him. So regardless of when he was giving his confessionals about an ex being better looking than Kaitlyn or how much sex he has (he may have said them after a potential elimination, or in a manner he considered joking), he still said them. The moment that you become adversarial to the show lead, you’re probably going to be portrayed in a poor light unless the lead is Juan Pablo. Therefore, you have to be prepared ultimately for the worst.
Of course, Kaitlyn was radio silent on Snapchat-gate during the blog, and we find it interesting that host Chris Harrison also did not do an often-customary TV Guide interview. Maybe that was a coincidence, but he did not put himself in a position to be asked about her potentially spoiling the winner of the season.
