ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8 debate: On Stana Katic’s Kate, Nathan Fillion’s Rick, and baby possibilities
We’ve spent a great deal of time speculating as of late as to whether or not Kate Beckett should go into politics, or also whether she should get the promotion to Captain now that Penny Johnson Jerald a.k.a. Captain Gates is leaving “Castle” before season 8 begins.
However, one subject that we’ve talked a little bit about but never explored completely is this: What if Castle and Beckett end up having a baby together? The show has addressed Beckett’s “bad with kids” mentality before, mostly in “The Good, the Bad, and the Baby” where she did in the end learn that she was better equipped for it than she thought for most of the hour. It’s something that is explored on a variety of different TV shows for married couples, and this one for the most part really should not be any different.
The case for a baby – For one, it would be a really fun story for the two to tackle if it comes as a surprise. Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic have both shown to be great at funnier scenes, and there would be many that would come out of watching these two plan for it. If there was ever a concern about a lack of fun sideplots, this is an easy fix.
Also, this is a subject that has been introduced, and the show never wrote it out completely. Therefore, we have to think it will be brought up again at some point.
The case against a baby – Does “Castle” really need to go in this direction with their story? We’re not entirely sure that they do, mostly because we know already that there are so many different things that the series does great as it is that adding another child could complicate things. Also, Rick already has Alexis, and there are so many baby stories that have been done before that it is hard to find new ground.
We’re going to ultimately leave this up to you: What should the show do in regards to a possible Caskett baby? Share in our poll, and head over here to see some other recent debates on the series! I really think they both have a lot to understand about each other and make better grounds. I mean, it’s like in Castle they forget all the issues they have immediately, and there are many trust and other issues raised that should be talked about. I mean, take the season 5’s end arc, the worst ever, especially TSATQ, Beckett kisses another guy but nothing happens, she’s insecure and both look bored and then the secrets and the engagement just lets all that slide?

If the writers can right this ship, tell a compelling story arch, mix the sexy banter with edge of your chair suspense for 3/4 of season eight, then maybe starting a family can seem as the logical next step. Until that is accomplished
having Beckett become pregnant becomes a gimmick.

Actually if Becket becomes a captain there would be no problem with a pregnancy. Likewise if she becomes a senator. Actually if she were to run for the senate it could be a plus.

Marlowe made it impossible for Beckett to run for elected office. Under his supervision she filed false tax returns for 15 years, lied to the NYPD and the FBI about her marital status, had three or four extra marital affairs, was suspended without pay by Cap. Gates for conduct unbecoming, fired by Tha Attorney Generals office for leaking classified documents. The NYC press would turn that into a circus .

extra marital affais? What are you even talking about?

She was legally married for fifteen years, that means all the guys we saw her with in the course of seven seasons was exactly that.

I feel your right with your move. She is already pregnant it would be hard to hide when the new espisodes start filming in July. She always wanted to be the captain, so let her start at that point before moving on to become a senator. As earlier espisodes stated 3 kids. As the first esposide starts for season 8 her letting castle know he going to become a dad again, could be pretty funny. And baby makes three.

After the debacle of the abduction, you actually want the writers to take on something much more complicated as having a baby? No thanks, it would become a disaster making 6.23 resemble a walk in the park.

Tell me this is a joke. They couldn’t get the abduction plot straight, still haven’t, Beckett having a baby would complicate plot lines beyond the abilities of these writers. If there is to be a season 9 they probably couldn’t say for sure if she is pregnant in that season.

No, they really shouldn’t, not just yet! They have some more understanding to do, really and be even more open to each other. Then the dynamic needs to be straighten out. Pregnancy should never be done on-screen, unless it’s the last ep of the season and an old enemy is there, otherwise that would be odd. And the main reason for the show’s quality dropping from season 5 second half for many, and for many from season 6 or 7 is because of the unbalanced characterization, and a baby would only increase that. The runners are also new to handling everything fully yet, they need to get a better grasp at characters and set the right platform for a baby to come, otherwise it’s just better at the end of the series.

No, they do not need a baby. I do not want to watch them fussing and cooing over one. I want to watch them fight bad guys and bring them to justice. It was cute in The Good, The Bad and the Baby, but just for that episode. Let Kate be Captain (I hope that is what they make her and not Senator – don’t even go there) and then at the end of the Season (which is probably going to be the final season of the show), let them have a baby and let them live happily ever after! I know a lot of the kids that watch the show want them to pop out babies, but I, being of the older demo, do not want that. If they go that way, I am out.

We will not miss you. It should be realized that the villains will be chased and caught by day and the family life enjoyed by night. When a murder occurs at night the live in nanny can handle things. It should also be noted that actual episodes featuring the baby will probably be limited. Of course, if Becket becomes senator the entire scenario may change possibly for the better or for the worse depending on your view point. I am 74 and love murder mysteries and babies and after having babies and grand babies I am certainly aware that babies can certainly thrive and improve on family life without conflicting with careers.

Well actually I might miss him! You can’t really say that to anyone! BTW, Castle has said in one episode that he never trusted nannies or never wanted one for Alexis, and not just for he was there but he just didn’t, so now with his other baby, why not do the same? Then character wise, Castle character is made to stay at home with the baby rather than go and solve the case, I mean that’s obviously what Castle character should choose. The main dynamic is of Castle and Beckett fighting crime together and with a baby that’s hard. Maybe if they are at the end of the show then yeah they could, but otherwise, it wouldn’t work really, or they would probably be showing at least Beckett more than Castle, and unbalanced characterization on an episode wouldn’t work.

Agree on some points and disagree on others. If a nanny is out of consideration then there is probably Martha. A little more trouble taking a baby and then picking it up later but doable – many, many folks do it today – to day care, to parents and willing friends. You do what you have to do.
Harvey
June 15, 2015 @ 7:47 am
Yeah only Castle doesn’t have to do anything, maybe they can show he has to be out there for some revenge or something and then it might work that why he’s not at home, otherwise not really, as everybody knows he just loves children. And then handling a baby is complicated and with new runners, especially, it would be a risk, as they might just not handle it yet. Then Castle and Beckett need to open up even further.

Translating real life emotions and character evolution to the small screen is easier said than done. Let’s see if Winter/Hawley can first clear the obstacles left unanswered and mudding the Castle landscape before they start their own revised Casket mythology .
I actually would prefer they not clean up season 7 loose ends. Leave them be and start fresh, if the previous stable couldn’t find it necessary to answer ithem n 23 episodes, why bother.

Yes, they should have one or more babies depending on how long the series airs. As stated, seeing them care for a baby for a night shows great potential in having a child of their own. There can be tremendous joy, love, pain and humor from welcoming a baby into their lives. I would not want it to be a series only about a baby but with Castle’s wealth there should be no problem with a nanny. It should also be remembered that Martha is moving out to restart her acting career and Alexis is going to college and should allow adequate air time for a baby although at the expense of Martha’s and Alexis’s air time.

It doesn’t have to be funny. Law and Order SVU have found deaply meaningful ways to add a baby to a serious drama without changing any of the character;s basic plots.
