MTV’s ‘Scream’ spoilers: On the meaning behind new mask

There are many different entertainment products coming out this summer with high expectations, and we have to put “Scream” at the top of the list. We don’t imagine that MTV made the bold move to revive the series just in hopes that it would be an okay addition to their lineup. Why in the world would they?

With bold moves tend to come more bold moves, and the show obviously knew what it was doing when it decided to not keep the iconic mask from the film franchise at the center of the movies. Why do this? As it turns out, they wanted to create a much bigger backstory here than just having someone buy a cheap costume. Speaking per MTV, executive producer Jill Blotevogel  said the following:

“TV has to expand upon the 90 minutes of a movie … We’ve got to find a bigger mystery so that we have things to dig in to. Our mask had to have more meaning than just a scary disguise that the killer puts on… I always compare it to how the Cylons had to be updated for ’Battlestar Galactica. You’ve got to be able to take some creative license to create a bigger mystery because as it says in the pilot, you can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series… unless you make it more, unless you start to care about the characters, unless you have a bigger mystery behind what’s going on, and that’s what we needed to do to the mask.”

In the end, it’s a smart idea to try to give the mask a little more of an identity and a role in this world. Of course, now the pressure is on in order to see whether or not this said mask actually has a backstory that makes it all worth it.
