ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8 debate: Should Stana Katic’s Beckett be new Captain?
In some ways, it is rather hard to find necessarily any sort of silver lining that is going on with the departure of Penny Johnson Jerald on “Castle.” Captain Gates was fun, especially since there are no other regular characters on the show now who have some sort of authoritative position over Richard Castle. Sure, Beckett and others question his kooky theories from time to time, but they do not necessarily have any genuine power over him.
The main thing you have to remember is that there is no replacing Gates, since no character can bring what she did to the role. Anyone who comes on next will simply have to find their own flavor. Could that include Beckett as Captain? It’s possible. Despite Stana Katic’s character being told that she has potential to do so much more beyond just getting a promotion in the NYPD, this may still be a career route that she chooses over politics. While there are a few interesting wrinkles that could come from a political shift, that may be too much of a change to the show’s DNA. Giving her the promotion on the force would keep at least some of the fabric the same.
With that, though, there are a few questions:
1. Would Beckett be able to spend as much time out in the field, and if she stays at the precinct, who works with Castle?
2. Would her relationship change with any of the characters if she was the boss?
3. Will there be a new detective on the force in her place?
Given the subtraction of Gates, we do figure that there will be a new character added somewhere, even if it is just a recurring guest star. The question would be where they would fit in to the world, and much of it depends on how Beckett is handled.

It will be interesting to see in which thenew show runners take the show as they have plans to make it more dynamic. I also think that the delay in Stana re-signing probably had more to do with her wanting to confirm that there was still good stories to tell about Beckett than anything else. Obviously she was convinced for at least one more season, hopefully more, the trouble is at present none of the options indicate dynamic storylines.

no. this will be more like SVU than Castle. i love them working together. If the new captain is dirty, it will make one hell of a show! :D

Nope! The show’s about them solving crime together, as a captain she won’t be able to do that out in the field and them working separately has proved to never work.

Absolutely, she can continue to work the murder board, she can oversee to the interogations and do some interogating on her own and like Montgomery go out on the field when necessary.
Castle can continue to go out with Ryan and Esposito and his banter and theories will be expressed at the murder board, her office and the break room. The main difference will be now she’ll have face to face meetings with the commissioner and judges with Castle at her side, this is fiction after all and of course the poker games with Connelly and Lahaine. And there should be a new female detective to take her place.
It will be interesting to see the subject Castle chooses for his first venture into serious literature. And the first Cop novel Ryan writes, with Castle as his mentor.
