Ratings: ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ falters against ‘The Bachelorette’; ‘The Whispers’ has solid start
While we know that the audiences of “The Bachelorette” and “So You Think You Can Dance” do not entirely overlap, we were worried somewhat about the latter series the moment it was announced to be airing against the dating show. After seeing some of the ratings for last night, some of these fears were in fact realized.
While “The Bachelorette” actually surged up to a pretty strong (at least for summer) 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the dance competition premiered to just a 1.2 rating. This is a drop of 25% from where the show premiered at last year, and it does not bode particularly well for the rest of the season, given that it tends to lose a little bit of steam sometimes going into the live rounds. Fox tried to make some big changes for season 12, hiring new judges Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo, while at the same time shifting the format to a “street versus stage” theme.
Elsewhere, the news was slightly better for ABC’s new drama “The Whispers,” which started out with a pretty solid 1.5 rating. This is definitely enough for it to have a run of at least a couple of seasons if it can hold on to at least most of that figure. Remember that “Mistresses” typically fared far worse, and yet it is currently in its third season.
One other thing that we still want to note here is that even though it doesn’t get nearly the press of some of the other reality shows, “American Ninja Warrior” (2.0) continues to be a force to be reckoned with.
