Could ‘Community’ season 7 happen? Joel McHale talks movie, season 6 finale on ‘Conan’
For those who do not know, today the season 6 finale of “Community” was officially uploaded to Yahoo Screen. As you would expect, this leads to a variety of mixed emotions, and questions regarding just what is left in the tank for the onetime NBC series now.
Are we really at the end of the road? During Joel McHale’s interview on “Conan” last night, he seems to mention that he would be down for doing another season, but Conan O’Brien interrupts him (most likely due to time) before he can say too much more. The reality here is that many of the show’s cast members are moving on to do other things. Paget Brewster is in the new Fox series “Grandfathered.” Meanwhile, Ken Jeong is toplining the new ABC comedy “Dr. Ken.” Danny Pudi tried to make it on NBC again with his series “Strange Calls,” which may be redeveloped at some point in the future. These are busy people, and this is without even mentioning what McHale already does regularly on “The Soup.” (We wouldn’t consider any “exits” that happened in the finale as anything keeping the show from continuing in some form.)
So while we think that a season 7 proper is unlikely, McHale does clearly say that he would do a movie provided that show creator Dan Harmon is the one to write it. We do think that a movie will happen at some point in the future, mostly because it completes the whole “six seasons and a movie” prophecy, and also because it would provide some sort of closure to the fans.
We imagine that most of the current cast would be on board with that, and given that it is a movie and a potential farewell, we would hope that some other former cast members like Donald Glover would be game to come back.
