Report Card: Did ‘Castle’ season 7 set the stage for more adventures?
It has been a couple of weeks now since we’ve had a chance to enjoy a new episode of “Castle.” Given the flood of episodes this spring, plus all of the uncertainty surrounding the fate of Stana Katic on the series, that definitely did lead to us having a ton to talk about with this show for a while.
Now, though, we have a chance to really start to look back? Was season 7 the best or the worst season of the ABC series? At the moment, we would say that it lies somewhere within the middle. It is better than the first season, and the ending especially lifts it over that polarizing conclusion to season 6. As a whole, we would say it is behind some of our favorite seasons in 3, 4, and 5, but it did do a whole lot right, as well.
What worked – Episodes like “Once Upon a Time in the West” and “Clear and Present Danger” were some of the classic “Castle” fun that we’ve come to expect. We know that the show has many serious moments, but we do still prefer it for the most time when it is completely nuts, and just has a good time embracing its more comedic side. It also suits Nathan Fillion very well as a performer this way.
With that said, we did get some good emotional moments this season, as well. Castle and Beckett are finally married, and “Hollander’s Woods” has to be one of our favorite finales. While there wasn’t a huge cliffhanger, it was at least a really cool story that genuinely had us scared.
What didn’t – The whole Castle disappearing story was a no-go. It was weird that he did not decide to deal with it for months, and this was the sort of thing that was almost impossible to pay off in a worthwhile manner. We’re still not sure that we really understand fully what happened to him. Also, the Castle P.I. storyline was met with mixed reviews; we liked it, but we know many did not.
Overall – Solid entertainment. It only rarely lifted itself to the next level, but at least looking back at “Castle” season 7 we have quite a few different things to smile about. Grade: B.

Season 7 meandered aimlessly, breaking the tenents on which the C/B mythology was built. How can Caskett who never give up never stop investigating suddenly stop, quit on the most personal mystery of their life, “his abduction.” S 7 had a few good episodes and one exceptional story. But on the whole it missed the mark. The wedding was ruined by the cheap set borrowed from Hollywood High School props department., by the astro turf, by the poor imitation out door lighting and the green screen from Ed Wood”s planet nine from outer space.

I agree with this review. Season 7 was rocky in places but still gave us a lot great Castle moments that we fell in love with.
The premiere was great, a lot of great moments.
The Wedding episode was good. I liked the wedding scene and the honeymoon episode was just laugh out loud brilliant.
Meme is Murder/Child’s Play both felt like an earlier episode of the series.
The PI story-line I liked. It was a nice change of things for a while and I found it fun.
Resurrection/Reckoning is, for me, the best two-parter of the series. Great to see the 3XK arc wrapped up and ending on a high note.
Sleeper I found to be a good episode. It gave us an explanation to some of the disappearance (I hope we get more answers in season 8). Some say the episode was a bit of a let down but I found it satisfactory.
In Plane Sight/Dead From New York were two episodes I really enjoyed. Both episodes had a load of funny moments and lovely ones too. The Martha scene in Dead From NY was touching and heartbreaking.
The Finale was a great episode. Powerful moments and wrapped things and set-up things nicely for things to come.
Overall season 7 was rocky. It had its ups and downs. For me the ordering of seasons for me is favorite to least favorite:
Season 5
Season 4
Season 6
Season 7
Season 3
Season 2
Season 1.
