ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 8 debate: Should Stana Katic’s Beckett enter politics?
We have spent so much time as of late in “Castle” articles discussing whether or not Stana Katic would be returning as Beckett, but one of the great things now is merely knowing that she’s back; after all, we can start talking about story elements again!
With that, let’s spend the majority of this article today touching on one simple subject: Whether or not we could be seeing her deciding to make a political run, which was teased during the season 7 finale. As Lance Reddick so passionately told her while she was trying to take a step up in the NYPD, she may be destined for so much more than that. She’s determined, she has a strong voice, and she also is solutions-oriented. Doesn’t all this sound like a good politician? You can also add to that the fact that she obviously has a strong moral code that she follows relentlessly.
Granted, there is still no guarantee that this story will even happen. Let’s look at this from multiple perspectives.
Why we want to see Beckett in politics – It’s not like she is going to be quitting the NYPD tomorrow. She’ll still mostly likely do her job, and starting the political process would be a side story. We don’t see the show ever deviating too far away from its original premise as long as it is on. This is just another interesting venue to explore.
Why we want to see Beckett avoid politics – This show isn’t “House of Cards,” and bringing us into this story, even as a minor story, could be a distraction. Maybe your dream endgame for Beckett is to see her someday as police commissioner or another high-ranking NYPD role.
One way or another, we want to know your preference! Vote in the poll below.

I really think they both have a lot to understand about each other and make better grounds. I mean, it’s like in Castle they forget all the issues they have immediately, and there are many trust and other issues raised that should be talked about. I mean, take the season 5’s end arc, the worst ever, especially TSATQ, Beckett kisses another guy but nothing happens, she’s insecure and both look bored and then the secrets and the engagement just lets all that slide? I would hate it if the new characters comes in between them, they did a lot of mistakes with Eric Vaughn and it’s fair to say they only cleaned up Castle’s mistake and ignored/forgave beckett too easily. I mean, why go to another storyline without actually making sure this all storyline is complete satisfied?

Does anyone remember the time travel episode? Where the guy from the future says she’ll be a US Senator and they’ll have three children?

Most certainly. Becket now has been given the opportunity to run for the Senate. Castle has received the Poe Pen award. Both have pledged their support for each other. Castle has indicated that he might start writing serious literature (remember he is supposed to win Pulitzer awards) . And Kate did not drink her champagne. Looks like we may be on our way to the future.

Being fiction, why not, the detective business has played out. As
some one pointed out on another site, Beckett would get killed in politics. She was insubordinate with Captain Montgomery, was suspended without pay by Captain Gates, was fired by homeland security, lied for 15years about her marital status and filed false taxes for that same length of time. Had extra marital affairs. The NYC press would have a field day with Ms Beckett.
A good written story trumps everything else. If not politics then give her a precinct of her own. Make her captain if she doesn’t grow neither will the show.

The Year of the Woman.
That’s what I vote for. The most often heard complaint is that Hollywood is a male dominated town. Also heard is that there are no good scripts written that can feature a woman.
The COTW was and still is a good concept except it needs a vitamin B shot. Castle needs a blood transfusion.
Let’s see a strong, smart woman on screen. Beckett/Stana has given us that for 7 years. Let’s explore that intellect and strength in another arena and allow Beckett to once again prove that women prevail.
Olivia Pope did it and Kate Beckett can do it. In fact Kate Beckett can Best Olivia Pope.
Go for it new show runners. You can do it.
Everybody hate politics and politicians. Let Kate Beckett come along and be the rare species. A trusted politician and then she can show Bracken how it’s done.
Let Bracken try to weld some power from his home in prison. Beckett can handle it.

I worked for a federal agency for 35 years. I won numerous EEO awards, participated in coop student program and a stay in school program. My support staff was all female. I hired my support staff from the secretarial field (GS – o5’s). I provided on the job training, developmental assignments and formalized seminars, conferences and technical training. All of them advanced to the GS I I level and one to the GS 15 level. Needless to say I am proud of them all. Now regarding your generalized statement that “women prevail”. I must take issue with this statement and state that some women prevail as do some men. It is not some higher degree afforded to women by their sex. Rather, women like men become achievers and prevail because of many factors including education, home environment, mentors, personality, field of endeavor, size of business organization, and, most importantly, the drive to succeed. Speaking of succeeding I would like to clarify a misconception that success is directly related to the amount of money you make. Money is no yardstick to use in measuring success. If it were there would only be one successful person and that would be the richest person in the world. Everyone else would have to be regarded as an “also ran”. It would also mean that teachers, carpenters. plumbers, etc. could never be considered as successful yet they are.

First of all I do not like the poll because there are too many alternatives and combinations of alternatives to have such a sterile and limiting outcome to anyone’s future. For example: Gates could retire and Becket could take over the 12th precinct while she decided whether to run for the Senate or not (depending, of course, on how long she had before she would have to announce that she was going to run for office). She could take a Captain’s job and wait until the next election to declare her intent to run. She could run and lose and go back to the NYPD until she could run again if she so desired. I really don’t care what she decides because I believe that there will be an opportunity for considerable story telling either way particularly when you consider that both jobs (or some other alternative) would be safer than her detective job and she could seriously consider having children. Castle stated that he would support her whatever she decided so she will be encouraged to try something new.

It has been announced that the mystery of Castle’s disappearance will be explored further in season 8. It will be interesting to see how this will play out along with Becket making a decision regarding her future career. It would appear that this would best be resolved early in the season before Becket makes her decision so that one would not interfere with the other.

Beckett didn’t like the politics she had to play when she went to DC to work for the Attorney General. It would be badly out of character for her to enter into the local political scene. She might look at it, but she’s a hands on cop who loves the street. She might try being a commander with the police, but she’d be unhappy with that job as they mentioned in the alternative universe episode. No, always a street cop.

Disagree completely. Becket is an achiever as demonstrated by the fact that she is the best detective in the NYPD. She is currently preparing a bucket list and career plan that will give her solid ground on which to stand as she moves forward to execute her plans. Besides the higher positions that she has on her horizon will give her more satisfaction and drive than she could ever have by continuing to be just a detective. The bear has been awakened, watch out.

But it won’t go with the show’s theme at all! Can’t show Castle following Beckett in politics, and helping and all is not what Castle show has ever been about! It needs cases, it needs romance and drama, not politics, at all!

You might not recall but when Becket told Castle that she had been asked to run for the Senate Castle told her that he would support her whatever she decided and he told her that he might consider writing serious literature. This was after Castle knew that he was to receive the Poe Pen award. This would all lead you to believe that the series would follow the story line told by the time traveler but, of course, it could follow some other direction as well. We will just have to wait and see. Regardless, we can be assured that it will be exciting, humorous, loving and entertaining as it has for the past seven years.

When Becket went to Washington as an agent she had bosses who dictated her activity and judged her performance with regard to how closely she adhered to their instructions. As a Senator it is totally different. In their interview her supporters let it be known that they believed in her morals and believed that she would do the right thing because of them. This let Becket know that she would be able to call her own shots.
