Critics’ Choice TV Awards 2015: Will Amy Schumer, Gina Rodriguez, or Lisa Kudrow win Comedy Actress prize?
Earlier this week, we kicked off what is our latest feature to get you through some of the painful couple of weeks ahead before the summer TV season really begins: Analyzing all of the contenders for the Critics’ Choice TV Awards before the ceremony takes place on May 31. There are many strong candidates in almost every field, but we are especially looking at a great year for comedy actresses. When you consider that Anna Faris, Mindy Kaling, and Zooey Deschanel were all snubbed, along with Amy Poehler in her last “Parks and Recreation” season, that shows you just how deep of a field this is.
What also makes the Actress in a Comedy Series field so fun is that we are not quite sure that there is a clear favorite among the people who have nominations.
The nominations
Amy Schumer, “Inside Amy Schumer” (Comedy Central)
Constance Wu, “Fresh Off the Boat” (ABC)
Gina Rodriguez, “Jane the Virgin” (The CW)
Ilana Glazer, “Broad City” (Comedy Central)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep” (HBO)
Lisa Kudrow, “The Comeback” (HBO)
Who should win – This is a tough race to pin down since you have many first-time nominees paired with some acting legends. We would have no problem seeming Glazer win it as a victory for an underrated comedy show, but we’re going to mark down Gina Rodriguez. The run for “Jane the Virgin” has been so much fun, especially since it finally gives The CW a little credibility and keeps it from being such an easy target of mockery.
Who will win – This is once again tricky. Gina is a possibility, but we’re going to say that “Friends” / “The Comeback” nostalgia leads to Kudrow getting it. Seeing the latter show return after many years was a joyous moment for TV critics, and while Louis-Dreyfus could pick up another trophy here, this is a chance for critics to shake it up.
