‘The Big Bang Theory’ season 6, episode 3 review: Sheldon’s new assistant, Amy’s jealousy

Sheldon Cooper is not exactly a man that has the ladies lining up around the block to date him, but how will Amy deal with him hiring an attractive young female as his assistant? Even if Sheldon’s new assistant isn’t interested in him, this situation is enough to raise Amy’s jealousy flag, so it will be interesting to see how this all plays out on tonight’s episode of “The Big Bang Theory”.

After getting a box filled with all of his childhood papers and journals, Sheldon thinks that there may be something in his old research that could get him a Nobel Prize. Of course he doesn’t want to go through all of his old journals himself, so he decides to hire a grad student named Alex to go through his work and see if anything is good enough to submit. When Amy finds out that not only has he hired a female assistant, but also that she’s smart, attractive and seems to tolerate Sheldon without much problem, Amy is insanely jealous even though Penny has assured her that she has nothing to worry about. The person that should be worried about Alex is Penny after she sees her flirting with Leonard. Interestingly enough the thing that seems to clinch Penny’s feelings for Leonard is seeing another attractive woman also having interest in him.

Howard is supposed to be headed back to earth soon and we really couldn’t be happier for it. The group dynamic has really shifted without him and it makes us realize just how important each one of them are to balancing this group of men out. Unfortunately, the ride home has been delayed and Howard has an anxiety attack.

Even though this is a scenario we’ve seen played out many times before (a woman sees another woman flirting with a man and then she wants that man), the writers made this a fun story and it helped put a spark back into Penny when it comes to Leonard. That’s something we really wanted to see since the last episode made us feel like she was just staying with him out of pity and fear of hurting him and that’s not what we want to see for either of them. Episode grade: B-
