‘Big Brother Canada 3’ interview: Bobby Hlad on eviction, his fake Veto, jury strategy

Bobby Hlad was an interesting contestant throughout “Big Brother Canada” this season, mostly because he was the sort of guy who you knew was capable of doing some big things and surprising most of the house. However, he ended up being a little more of a target for those outside of the alliance. He painted a target on his back with the Secret Veto, and then also caused himself some more trouble by completely failing to get along with Sindy. Ultimately, he was sent home right before the triple eviction a couple of weeks ago.

Late last week, we finally got a chance to sit down with Bobby for a one-on-one chat about the season, some of his ideas, and also how surprised he was by certain events in the house.

CarterMatt – How are you feeling about your time in the house looking back?

Bobby Hlad – I played my best. I knew I was a target since day one. Looking back, I knew my back was against the wall more than other people so I can’t get too down on myself. I could’ve been gone early week 1, week 2, any single week other than my HoH or Bruno’s HoH. I’m holding my head up high, and feeling like I lasted longer than some other people may have lasted.

Did you ever think that your Fake Veto would be a subject of so much conversation?

I had no idea that people would actually believe it because it came out of thin air! Zach told me that even the DR even asked him about it, so it is a big deal that it was [talked about] that much. I feel pretty accomplished that I created a lie out of thin air, and it spread throughout the house. It makes me feel a little bit better about my early exit.

Do you wish you had campaigned differently to save yourself?

The only thing I’ll say is that I wish I had campaigned harder for Sarah. I told her that I would come to her Tuesday night, because [I know] that things change all week, so I didn’t want to go to talk to Sarah until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning for campaigning. I wish I had come to Sarah harder and campaigned, because she was a vote I needed. I wasn’t getting it from the showmance side, so I really had to work on Sarah. I knew that Willow would have probably given it to me because I am better for her game, but I wish I had pushed harder on Sarah and showed her ‘listen, I told you my fake Veto was a lie.’ I could have told her a lot of information that could have been precious to her.

Is there any part of your experience that you are excited to watch back on TV?

How the whole fake Veto was portrayed! I had a really elaborate plan in the vault; I was going to fake-open a few vault doors. I am really curious to see how that came off on TV, what they showed, what they showed me telling Sindy, what they showed the houseguests seeing on the projector in the living room. I really want to see how that came across and how everyone believed it.

What surprised you the most about being in the house?

How hard it was going to be to lie to people. You really do get close to people in the house, and it’s hard to lie to their faces. You have to do it, but it was really hard and hard to stay believable in the moment. It’s almost crushing people’s dreams every time you vote them out of the house; that was a hard thing to do.

What are you looking for as a juror in terms of who deserves to win the game?

I’m looking for someone whose back was against the wall and didn’t float through ‘Big Brother Canada.’ There are two different strategies, one is to float and winning when you need to, and then the other who had to work harder and while I don’t want to say is more deserving, is probably more deserving. It to me means so much more to escape trials, like Dan Gheesling! He had a real game, and he had the funeral and he came out of that. He faced way more adversity than Derrick. Not to take anything away from Derrick, but I give a lot of respect to someone like Dan who can face a lot of trouble and come out on top.

Were you happy that two people followed you right out the door to jury, that way you at least had some more company there alongside Jordan and Sindy?

It was amazing! I wish I didn’t see Willow because I wanted her to go far, but it was nice to see Kevin because he was the reason I am here right now. It was nice for the company. I love them both so much. Five is better than three, especially the way the rooms are set up! It was nice to decompress and find out everything that happened and whether my information was right, because you are getting information from two more people and you are getting a fuller spectrum of the house.
