‘Reign’ season 3 spoilers: Looking ahead to Queen Elizabeth’s court
Tonight, “Reign” season 2 comes to a close, and as you probably have heard already, the upcoming third season is going to both take you to a new place and introduce you to a different part of the world at that time than what we have seen so far. Specifically, we are talking about England, and the court ruled and operated by Queen Elizabeth. She will be a regular presence then, and with that come many questions, including what kind of person she will be, how she is being represented, and whether or not she should be competition to Mary. Obviously, history buffs know a thing or two already about how all of this plays out, but this is not a show that is trying only to tell the most realistic story possible. It’s also entertainment.
When talking about the setup for the third season in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Laurie McCarthy made it clear that there are plans that they already have in store for bringing us this part of the world:
“The show’s got a certain amount of elasticity to it … It’s called Reign, and it can track any number of people’s reigns. So what I like about it is that [Elizabeth’s] been a character on our show, it feels like, almost since the beginning. And we’ve kind of painted this picture of her as somebody kind of lying in wait and a competitor of Mary’s, but also a threat to her. I’ve been really excited to meet her. And what she also allows us is the ability to go to another court, which is what we’re going to do in season 3. We’ll see the court of England, we’ll see the Elizabethan court and see the people who surround her. So that’s what I’m excited about; that allows the show to have even more scope.”
It is pretty natural to start to have some concerns about getting too many characters, even to the point where you start to feel a little bit overwhelmed. We don’t believe that will happen here, but the show may have a little more of a balancing act to manage when it returns.
