‘Last Man Standing’ renewed for season 5; is this ABC’s last renewal?

It seems like ABC may finally be getting now to the end of the road, at least when it comes to their decisions as to what shows to pick up for new seasons. Most of their other decisions on new shows have been made, but today it was finally confirmed (per Entertainment Weekly) that “Last Man Standing” will be returning for what is its fifth season.

This is proving time and time again to be an interesting case study for TV viewers, mostly because the majority of them may not even realize it is still on. It has spent the past couple of years airing at 8:00 p.m. Friday nights, and while its ratings are not good, it somehow manages to survive every single year. This is even more of a shock to us given that Tim Allen commands a pretty penny, even if this is not “Home Improvement” by any means in terms of success. Still, this is a family sitcom that can be plugged in almost anywhere, so don’t take this as a guarantee for sure that it will be coming on Fridays again.

As a matter of fact, we actually hopes that the show airs in some other spot. This will give it a better chance, and it will also spare some other show from airing after it, getting low ratings, and getting canceled. Just ask “Cristela” or “Malibu Country” about that.

In case you were wondering, one other reason why the network may want to keep the show around is to get it over the 100-episode barrier, which makes it an even easier syndication sell.
