‘Downton Abbey’ season 6: Julian Fellowes working with ITV on new project
Fans of “Downton Abbey” need to not fear the notion of Julian Fellowes moving completely over to American TV at the conclusion of the series. He has officially set his first project since writing the final episodes of the famed UK series, and it will once again air on ITV.
What this production will ultimately be is a three-part series entitled “Doctor Thorne,” which is based on the adventures of Doctor Thomas Thorne. The material was originally created by author Anthony Trollope, who according to the Mirror is one of Fellowes’ favorite writers. This feels to us almost like a passion project, something that he wanted to do for a long time but never really had the opportunity to do until now. With the schedule becoming a little more free now with the end of the series, this is an opportunity for him to do a little bit of other work before beginning on “The Gilded Age” over on NBC.
In a statement, Fellowes had the following to say:
“As a lifetime devotee of Trollope, my own favourite among the great nineteenth century English novelists and certainly the strongest influence over my work that I am conscious of, it is tremendously exciting and satisfying to know that my adaptation of one of his best-loved novels is coming to ITV. I could not be more delighted.”
We should ultimately make it somewhat clear here that while we are curious to see “The Golden Age” happen, at the moment NBC has been very quiet about it. We feel like this will probably be best suited as a project for pilot season next year, which gives everyone involved time to still make it great.
