‘The Following’ season 3 spoilers: ‘The Americans’ star signs up for possibly-dangerous role

If you are getting a prime guest-starring gig on “The Following” and you are a reasonably well-known actor, there is to us one easy conclusion to draw: You are probably not playing someone with the persuasion to be good.

What we can at least tell you for now is this. According to a report from TVLine, Annet Mahendru of “The Americans” fame has been cast to appear in multiple episodes, presumably starting near the end of the season. Her character’s name is Eliza, and she is an extremely dangerous, cunning, and most likely ruthless person who provides a face to much of the mythology near the end of the season. Is she the big bad to end all big bads? We’re not sure that we would go that far, mostly become of the fact that for this show, Joe Carroll will probably always be the big bad to us. It does not even matter completely if he is not on screen or even if he gets killed off later this season via execution.

Given the show’s recent ratings, it is certainly possible that Mahendru could be playing the show’s final villain, as well. The series has not bee renewed as of yet for a fourth season, and the ratings are not really indicating that this is a strong possibility. If it does end at the end of season 2, the one thing we can hope for is something reasonably satisfying, and hopefully not something with a huge cliffhanger.

We’ll have some further updates as they start to come out, so be sure to stay tuned for more!
