‘The Last Ship’ sets sail for Hulu

Last Ship -At this point, the battle for exclusive streaming rights to content has become a big deal. While we personally prefer it when shows are available on a variety of different platforms (it broadens exposure and allows consumers to choose rather than paying for multiple services), we understand from a corporate standpoint why exclusives work. For example, why would anyone watch a show on Hulu Plus with commercials when they can watch it without them on Netflix?

With this, we come bearing the news that “The Last Ship” has come to Hulu in an exclusive agreement. Starting now, you can stream all episodes of the Michael Bay-produced drama starring Eric Dane leading up to its season 2 premiere in June. This is a chance to potentially acquire some new viewers, and also for the studio to make even more money off of the show by shipping it out (sorry for the obvious pun).

It feels in particular like Hulu and Amazon have stepped up their exclusivity game recently when it comes to external content, while Netflix has slowed down a little. What’s the reason for all of this? We attribute it somewhat to the fact that Netflix already has some original programming that they can use as a primary selling point, and the other two services are still catching up. Hulu and Amazon do have some great stuff (“Moone Boy,” “Transparent”), but not everyone knows about them just yet.

To us, the real selling point of any of these services is simply the option of getting to watch them across any device. It’s very useful when you’re on a plane / stuck in a waiting room somewhere.
