‘Gotham’ finale spoilers: Death is coming … but to Fish Mooney?

It really should not come as much of a shock to anyone at this point that “Gotham” is planning to kill off a major character, just as it also should not come as a shock that this character could be Fish Mooney. Jada Pinkett Smith has already confirmed that she will not be returning for the series’ second season, which in so many ways makes her the de-facto choice to ultimately be given the ax.

With that being said, though, there is no major indication that this is for certain happening. All we can do is trust the information that we have, including executive producer Bruno Heller telling TV Guide that the finale will feature a showdown for the ages with Falcone, Mooney, Maroni, and the Penguin all involved: “It wouldn’t be a real showdown if everybody walked away from it, would it? Someone is not going to walk away from that.”

We have always felt like Smith has done the best job that she can in order to play Fish the way that she has been written; however, the character has never felt like a complete fit in this world. It feels like she was pulled out of something from the Tim Burton movies or even one of the cartoons. She’s very hammy and over-the-top, while the majority of the other characters are more subdued. There’s a difficult balance on “Gotham” between being grounded and gritty, and then being someone who stands out and feels like a comic-book character. We are not entirely sure that this happy medium has been completely achieved just yet.

New episodes of “Gotham” return on Monday, and hopefully this takes us on the trajectory that gets us to some big shockers at the end of the season.
