‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6: Can Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley carry show without Nina Dobrev?

Vampire Diaries -It has been almost 24 hours now since the news officially broke that Nina Dobrev is leaving “The Vampire Diaries,” even though some internet sleuths figured it out before then. The actress wants to go on and do other things, and we cannot blame her after investing so much time in this show.

So what is the rest of the series to do without her? It’s an interesting question. We’ve heard many fans demanding that the show be canceled, and we understand that it is hard to imagine the show without Elena. However, what about the crew behind the scenes, or the cast employed by The CW? We don’t think that Nina herself would want the burden of knowing that the jobs of everyone on set were ending because of her decision, and we admire the attempt to go on without for at least one more season.

Now, the question here is if it will work. Our feeling is that it could, but it depends on what sort of story the show wants to tell. If this is suddenly the tale of Stefan and Damon Salvatore as they try to understand their present more through their past, we’re all right with it. Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder are easily strong enough actors to carry the show, and there are plenty of stories here to tell. Sarah Salvatore may be being groomed here to be a more substantial character, as well, and we are fine with that.

The one mistake that the show could make would be to act like the show is still the same without Elena. Therefore, we don’t want to see another Damon love interest, and for the main characters to still be doing the same sort of things that they were when Elena was around. Also, we want it to be set up so that there is still a chance at the end of the show for Damon to seek Elena out again and for the two to be happy. Any other endgame for Damon at this point would be unsettling.
