‘The Vampire Diaries’ season 6: Nina Dobrev, Michael Trevino both exiting
You know that this was likely coming after some news was released online about a massive party held for Nina Dobrev and Michael Trevino over the course of the weekend. Now, it is unfortunately official: Both Nina Dobrev and Michael Trevino are leaving “The Vampire Diaries” after six seasons in order to pursue other projects. This was a decision that the two parties made for themselves, and the timing should be no coincidence given that most actors sign on for six seasons when they join a show. Their contracts were up, and they most likely chose to go elsewhere.
Dobrev herself chose to announce the news of her exit in a statement on Instagram, where she had the following to say:
“I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries … I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime.”
Meanwhile, we also have a pair of statements from showrunner Julie Plec when it comes to losing both of these two actors after being mainstays for so many years.
On Dobrev – “Saying goodbye to Nina is both bittersweet and beautiful. After six-plus years together, the entire cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries has reached a level of closeness that I don’t think any of us ever expected. Nina is excited to spread her wings, get some rest, travel the world and also take it by storm, and we support her a thousand-fold. We will miss Nina and the four hundred characters she played, but we look forward to the insane and exciting challenge of continuing to tell stories of our Salvatore Brothers and our much-loved and gifted ensemble.”
On Trevino – “Michael has been a beloved member of the Vampire Diaries family since day one. Even though he’s also going to be out in the world exploring new opportunities, we look forward to finding creative ways to make sure he and his character Tyler Lockwood always remain a part of the show.”
Maybe we’ll get a chance to see these two again someday, but the one major takeaway of these statements is that it seems to confirm that both Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder are going to return for a seventh season. We’re torn on whether or not the show will work without its female lead, but as we’ve said before, we also don’t want to see the cast and crew penalized and the show end because someone decided to leave.
