‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 2, episode 16 preview: Fitz, Simmons get an ‘offer’
When Tuesday night’s new episode of Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” comes on the air, Fitz and Simmons are going to get a chance to see just what Robert Gonzales of the Real SHIELD is like. Isn’t he a charmer? Not really. Instead, he’s more of the kind of guy who may end up driving the two of them up the side of the wall with the way in which he chooses to conduct his business.
In the sneak peek below, you get a sense as to one of his primary motives for working to seize control of the organization from Coulson: Trust. He feels like he and Fury are hiding something in the great Toolbox of Mystery (our personal name for it), and humbly requests that Fitz work to open it. While he acts as though there is zero obligation and he and Simmons are free to go after a briefing, who is to say that this will really be the case? There’s no indication of that one way or another.
What does make Gonzales a compelling antagonist right now is that he is not Hydra, nor is he someone acting with the same intentions as Ward was. His endgame is slightly similar to Coulson’s but he has his own manner of doing things and is extremely ruthless in ensuring that he gets what he wants. He’s already committed Mack and Bobbi to his cause.
Is it possible that these two in particular can be switched back? We hope so, since we really don’t want Adrianne Palicki to be just a one-season cast member.
