‘Game of Thrones’ season 5: George R.R. Martin hopes to follow it up with book
We know that many longtime readers of A Song of Ice and Fire have been dreading the thought of “Game of Thrones” being ahead of the book series, and while we do think that this is going to happen eventually, we can at least tell you this: It probably won’t happen until after season 6 provided that George R.R. Martin has his way.
For all of those who have been waiting long to see The Winds of Winter, the author confirms that he wants the story out before season 6 would premiere on HBO next year. Speaking per Entertainment Weekly, he explains that finishing in this time window “has been important to me all along … I wish it was out now. Maybe I’m being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish. But I canceled two convention appearances, I’m turning down a lot more interviews—anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done.”
We’ve said this before, but we definitely still feel this way: It has to be tough to be Martin at times. No doubt, there are millions of lives that his stories have enriched, but he probably cannot go longer than a day or two without someone clamoring for him to finish his next book. Anything that he does that does not involve writing is somehow criticized, and while he may have put himself in this position by writing in the first place, he never imagined that it would be like this.
At this point, we’ve submitted to the thought that the series is going to most likely conclude on HBO before the books do, but if we can get another year or two of giving the book readers a first look at the content, then this would obviously be preferred. We’re not even an avid book reader; this just seems like the right way to go about this since that is where the material originated.
