‘Poldark’ episode 5 preview: Demelza gives birth; Francis’ new trouble

We have now made it to the halfway point of the BBC series “Poldark,” which has featured Ross trying his best to repair Cornwall in the time he was away. As a whole, this has not been a particularly easy task for him in the slightest, given the despair he has been forced to navigate through.

While there has been sorrow, there have also been moments of hope. Many of these moments will culminate in the fifth episode of the season airing next week, which is themed heavily around the birth of Demelzaès child. Were this an American drama, this is the sort of storyline that would traditionally occur in a finale, and it just serves to prove further that this is a program that is trying to do things differently and shake up the norm. It is something that as TV critics we greatly appreciate!

Poldark will not be the only character going through some element of despair by the end of the episode. For more on that, just take a look at the official synopsis for this episode, courtesy of the network:

“Demelza gives birth and resolves to help Verity reconcile with Captain Blamey. Ross welcomes old friend Dr Dwight Enys to Cornwall, and Francis’s persistent gambling threatens the security of all he holds dear.”

This episode should serve as a foundation for the rest of the season, and we have to say that as a North American watching the series, we’re enjoying this! Much like “Downton Abbey,” it provides the same how-the-other-half lives sort of feel to it. We have studied this period extensively, but only from one side. This is a chance to witness the aftermath for a man like Ross after a revolution, where he realizes how greatly his world has changed and what he has to do next to adapt.
