‘Coach’ revival coming to NBC with Craig T. Nelson

NBC -Clearly, NBC is really out to get some viewers in the 18-49 demographic … and yes, we are definitely being sarcastic. How else are you supposed to describe the fact that “Coach” is coming back on the air?

Sources confirm that the hit comedy, which previously starred Craig T. Nelson, has been brought to the network in a brand-new package. This revival will be held by original creator Barry Kemp, and be set in the future as Nelson’s character comes out of retirement more or less to help his son, who is trying to start up a team at an Ivy League school in Philadelphia. While Nelson has been confirmed, there is no news just yet as to if any other members of the original cast are going to be returning.

We’re not meaning to ridicule the network extensively for this move, given that we understand they need some new comedies, given that the majority of what they have done as of late as been an unmitigated disaster. Their Thursday comedies bombed in the fall, and things are not going much better on Tuesdays, Interestingly, it is starting to look like “Community” would be getting decent ratings by comparison to what the network is drawing now.

The question that we have here is just who is going to be watching this show. NBC will be banking on the fact that fans of the original series who watched with their parents will now want to watch the show with their children. It’s a similar phenomenon to “Boy Meets World” / “Girl Meets World,” but the difference here is that “Coach” never had that same beloved status for young viewers. It was more popular by adults then.
