‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 11 spoilers: Jessica Capshaw on Callie, Arizona’s future
This has been a very painful season for Callie and Arizona on “Grey’s Anatomy.” There is no easy way around that. We have seen the two go through a heck of a difficult breakup, one made even more difficult due to the fact that they co-parent a child, and that they were married and together for so long. They also still work at the same hospital, so there is no escaping anything that happens … including the two potentially moving forward and dating someone else.
Ultimately, one of the real reasons that this series works so well is strictly due to the fact that creator Shonda Rhimes is unafraid of big moves, and of facing reality. In the real world, it would not be that easy for these two to ever get back together, given that there is so much pain and difficulty there. With that in mind, there is no way to blink and make all of that go away. This is something that series star Jessica Capshaw comments on to Entertainment Weekly, explaining that she is still not entirely sure just what the future is going to hold for her character:
“I don’t know [if it would work] … Only because they had to go through so much to make that decision to be apart, it’s so hard to think about them being together. They’re just getting to the point where that’s all good. I would feel bad if they then took steps backwards and ended up in a relationship that was super challenging. Everyone longs for the beginning, I get that, you want them to go back to the beginning, but you can’t do that with anything in life.”
By the time that Arizona and Callie are at the end of the season, it’s possible that the two could each have new love interests. After all, the thing to remember here is that the show is playing a long game. The odds of it returning for another season are high, so there should not be any pressure to tie things together neatly come the finale in May.
