‘NCIS’ season 12, episode 19 preview: Tony, Bishop face awkward moments in ‘Patience’
After some erratic scheduling as of late, consistency is going to be the name of the game for “NCIS” over the course of the next several weeks. You have a new installment next week entitled “Patience,” and beyond it, there will be another new episode entitled “No Good Deed.” Let’s just say that there are going to be a variety of surprising, fun stories that will play out here over the course of the next several weeks.
Next week specifically, though, what we are hoping to see is a very fun storyline that focuses quite a bit on an undercover mission for Tony and Bishop, who seem to be embarking on some sort of mission in couples’ counseling. More than likely, this is going to be every bit as silly as it looks in the promo below, but we have to say that we’re more than fine with that. After all, we prefer the show at times when it is comedic.
What is interesting here comes in the dichotomy between this promo (which is very funny by all accounts), and the somewhat-serious synopsis that has already been shared courtesy of CBS:
“The murder of a petty officer sparks a lead in a 40 year old airport bombing cold case that Gibbs and DiNozzo have been assigned to for the past two years. Also, McGee is jealous that he was not previously briefed on the cold case.”
We’re sure that we will have more on this episode before it airs, so be on the hunt for that.

Poor Michael Weatherly, what a big demotion he has to endure this season: From a NCIS Special that you had to take seriously to a man that acts like a love sick teenager and would be a better comedian than an NCIS Agent.

Tony’s roll seems so insignificant now days. It’s like they don’t know what to do with him anymore. I am a big Tony fan but more so with Ziva by his side. It gave both of them quite the story. Once Ziva left, it’s like she took a big part of him with her. The interesting part. So far this season, we’ve seen Tony with Keates. That’s ok and all but hardly a storyline to get interested in and that whole handcuff scene in the bullpen made Tony look like a perverted man in his 40’s and it made Zoe look trashy. I liked “Blast from the Past” because Michael Weatherly acted great in it but we’ve been there already with the characters pasts. They are getting old. Just not sure what they plan with Tony anymore or if they even know where do go with him. I’m a firm believer that when Ziva left NCIS, she took Tony’s zest with her and we have yet to get it back.

Loren, I agree with you totally. I’m foremost a Gibbs fan and secondly love McGee. After years of McGee bring written as a geek to be made fun of by Tony it’s very nice that he finally is getting his due. I’m delighted he is coming to the forefront with Gibbs. I will also add that even though I wanted to see more of McGee through the years, I refrained from whining about it!

It wouldn’t be so disappointing if Tony had started out as the minor character he has become. It also wouldn’t be so insulting if they weren’t so obviously tossing Tony under the bus to replace him with McGee. Do they really have to make McGee so obviously the only one Gibbs has any respect for every time? Couldn’t they sacrifice one super Gibbs moment for Tony fans? Tony is the only character who has been demoted from a character who mattered and was good at what he did to an insignificant somewhat unexciting character in order to replace him with actors suddenly more favored by tptb. It’s not fair to Tony fans and IMO rather disrespectful and unappreciative of Michael Weatherly’s work to create an interesting, multi layered character. When the character is ALWAYS written as insignificant, on the losing end of the battle of wits, or as shallow and clueless, it cuts into his fan base. They seem to be going out of their way to write him as unsympathetic and never write situations for the character that are deep, interesting, or flattering. Really – Gibbs and McGee don’t have to have all the flattery and good stories and Tony’s demotion to a third string character is unprecedented treatment of an actor on this show.

I’m not a big Tony fan but I know what you mean. I can’t figure out why TPTB pay Michael Weathery to stand around and do nothing but look silly. I have been suspicious that when he defended Cote de Pablo when she left that he got on the bad side of the higher ups. They didn’t fire him because they were afraid that would do even more damage to the show after having Cote leave. They couldn’t lose two important characters in two years. The sad thing for Weatherly is that he has invested so much time, the best years of his life, on NCIS and like David James Elliot of JAG found out, it wasn’t appreciated by TPTB. Hollywood is a tough town to survive in. It’s about powerful people with big egos making a lot of money. The screen time will go to the people who play ball with the boss.

I wonder if we’ll ever see Tony cast in danger again on this show. He’s turned from great agent into not much more than the evening’s comic moment. Gibbs and now McGee it seems are the only two agents whose stories have any suspense, drama, or danger. I’d like to see my favorite character Tony, do something besides be the evening’s comic relief. The writers seem quite eager to flatter Gibbs and McGee with good stories but Tony is either the buffoon or completely insignificant. I’m quite disappointed. If the finale is another big Gibbs or McGibbs story, I think this season will be my last. I’m tired of being a disappointed Tony fan.

It’s honestly funny that you are saying this, because as a McGee fan, I spent years feeling the way you are now. McGee was the punching bad for so long and Tony was front and center. I don’t want him totally in the background, but it is nice finally seeing more McGee. Hopefully they will find a nice balance for all of us with favorite characters.
