‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Kate McKinnon’s Justin Bieber – Calvin Klein spoof still works

SNL -Good news for all “Saturday Night Live” diehards such as ourselves: The hiatus is almost over! Next week, you are going to have a chance to enjoy a new episode hosted by Dwayne Johnson a.k.a. the artist formerly known as The Rock.

Tonight, though, NBC is replaying the Kevin Hart – Sia episode that aired earlier this year, and we are keeping up our tradition of looking back at an extremely well-done sketch. There were a few good choices tonight: Hart’s monologue about the raccoon problem he had still makes us laugh, and is one of his better standup bits. Even Sia’s musical performances are interesting in a very strange but artistic way. It’s the sort of stuff we do like to get on “SNL,” at least since it gets people talking.

Still, nothing really tops the Justin Bieber – Calvin Klein spoof that was done by Kate McKinnon. These are the best commercial parodies that the show has done this season so far, mostly because of her almost spot-on impersonation of the Biebs and all of his mannerisms. The reality here is that if you really take her out of it and put in another actor, the writing is not the greatest we’ve seen in an “SNL” sketch. She sells it with her commitment to the character, both physically and with the dialogue. Also, Cecily Strong is great at making her model character look completely dead inside as she is forced to handle this Bieber’s antics throughout.

It’s good that Justin had a good sense of humor about this; otherwise, this would probably be the sort of thing that haunts him, much like his upcoming roast could.
