‘Empire’ season 2: Is there already a fear of high expectations?
When “Empire” was first in development, we feel like there was a certain expectation for the show to be a solid addition to Fox’s lineup. However, at the same time we don’t know of a single person who was sitting around and thinking that this show was going to be drawing the best ratings of the entire broadcast network season. The show was a runaway hit like nobody predicted we were going to see, and now, there is a little more pressure than ever in an attempt to try to deliver a great handful of episodes coming up.
So is this sort of hype something that the powers-that-be behind the scenes of the great series are aware of? Definitely, but that doesn’t meant that they are necessarily going to be buying into some of this hype. for a little bit more on this particular subject, just take a look at what executive producer Ilene Chaiken had to say to TVLine:
“As Danny Strong said to me, ‘Let’s just keep doing what we’re doing.’ I’m not going to pretend that I’m not aware that the show’s a big success — and of course we want to honor that success. We know what the tropes of the show are. We’ve established some conventions that we want to continue, and we want to keep it as breathtaking and fun and gritty as it is — and then we also want to be really true to the stories that we set up and the characters that were created. If we do that and we do it rigorously, I’m hopeful that it’s got great, great longevity. I feel that there’s very, very deep font of story available to these characters in this world.”
We feel like the real make-it-or-break-it component is going to be the characters, and making sure all of them have something new and exciting to do. If someone no longer has a purpose, get rid of them. You never want to keep someone around too long.
