‘American Idol XIV’ spoilers: Boy George could mentor Qaasim Middleton, Tyanna Jones, top 9

American Idol -Ultimately, the reason that we put “could” in the article title above is very simple: There is not necessarily a guarantee that either Qaasim Middleton or Tyanna Jones are going to make it to the top nine on “American Idol XIV” … even if we do hope that they do.

According to TVLine, the theme for the top 9 show next week (which will be jumping back to the Wednesday timeslot) is going to be songs from the 1980s. With that in mind, the show is bringing in a music icon to help out: Boy George. He’s certainly a familiar face to some, but this is definitely proof that the show is not exactly making a real effort to appeal to the young crowd. How many people under 25 know who Boy George really is? It’s a little questionable.

As for the theme itself, sure, it’s dated, but we really love ’80s music and there are parts of it that are still being used today. There is potential for there to be some campy fun here, depending on how willing the artists are to actually go for it. This can be daunting, and you always have that insecurity about really putting yourself out there and giving an entertaining performance. Let’s hope that they get over this quickly.

Also, let’s hope for a theme sometime in the future that gives people a chance to perform something at least a little more current than what we’re having next week.
