‘Girls’ season 4, episode 9 review: Ray’s political achievement; Jessa’s relationship failure

Remember when Ray was the supposed slacker guy running a coffee shop on “Girls”? Out of all the characters on this show, he may have grown up the most, which is saying something given that he was relatively grown up in the first place on the show.

Now, the character has landed a chairperson spot serving the government in Brooklyn, which is about as low of a political position as you can have, given that your main responsibility is trying to listen to a variety of different complaints from the public. Some of them may be inane, but their voices have to be heard! Unfortunately for Ray, his entire celebration was interrupted somewhat by having to deal with a variety of different factors, including Marnie making the entire party about her and Desi’s engagement. Ray did not want to hear about this at all, or that he was the first person told.

Hannah eventually turned up, as well, after trying to deal not so much with the news that her father was gay, but that she had to constantly hear about his sexual history now in a way she didn’t before. What made this episode so well-written is that through her own experiences with her father, she realized that she may have a habit of sharing too much about herself with complete strangers. It was a nice, but subtle, lesson for her.

Then, you had the story of Adam and Jessa, which was interesting in how the two really put themselves out there, only to be hurt. This is not something that we tend to see from them. Jessa wanted to be with Ace, only to realize that he was just using her as a ploy to get closer to Mimi-Rose. Meanwhile, Mimi-Rose decided that she didn’t want to be with “anyone,” which really drove everyone insane. Now, Adam and Jessa are both alone, but at least they have their friendship! They’re almost sweet together, and we wouldn’t be surprised if there were some ‘shippers out there for them. Grade: A-.
